Monaco to welcome Bacon scholars

The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation due to open autumn 2014

A new private, non-profit organization dedicated to Irish born, British artist Francis Bacon has been established in Monaco and should be open later this year. The ground floor of Villa Elise on Boulevard d'Italie has been earmarked for the Foundation, which will open by appointment only, to students, researchers and the general public.

Established by Monaco resident Majid Boustany, who discovered Francis Bacon's work whilst studying art history, the Foundation will house the founder's private art collection. Scholars will have access to an essential resource that includes paintings by the figurative painter from the late 1920s to the early 1980s, graphic works, working documents from Bacon's studios, and rare items from his furniture and rug design period. In addition, there's a large library on the artist, a collection of exhibition catalogues, works by Bacon's peers and influences, and an archive of photographs and pictures by people who knew him.

The mission of the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation is to promote a better understanding of the artist's work and life, particular during the years from 1946 to 1950, when he worked in Monaco and the South of France. Besides its research function, the institute will work with other foundations to organize exhibitions and seminars, finance projects associated with the artist, and support emerging artists.

The website is currently under construction, but can be visited at: Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation.
