What's new

Last week we took a trip to The Ship and Castle, having been reminded by a colleague that it serves fish and chips for Friday lunch. The English pub has had a makeover since our previous visit, and it was very pleasant sitting on the covered terrace watching the boats come and go in Fontvieille Harbour. As for the food, the kitchen serves French style 'frites' rather than British thick-cut chips, and the dish arrives with tartar sauce and a slice of lemon, which for this Northerner is too 'fancy'. However, it does have mushy peas on the side, and there is a bottle of Sarson's Malt Vinegar on every table. Of course, the dish is not supposed to be posh nosh (youtube video). It's food for the masses and in Monaco provides a tasty reminder of the UK.

It was the first time in ages that we'd been to Fontvieille during the day, and I'd advise waiting until after Grand Prix if you're thinking of heading there yourself. The traffic was pretty much at a standstill all the way along Port Hercule and up avenue d'Ostende.

Over at Larvotto Beach there's more news about the Rose des Vents restaurant. Following the news that it would remain closed during summer (see 21 March 2019 newsletter), the Journal de Monaco official bulletin now reports that there's been an exchange of company shares, a change of management, and that a temporary lease until the end of September has been awarded. So it may be serving beach-goers after all.
