What's new

SBM has announced some drastic changes to Place du Casino, aiming to make it safer and easier to organize events there, notably a Celine Dion concert on July 18 this year. The central, raised area is to be flattened and paved over, installed with a pond and surrounded by palm trees in movable tubs. Traffic in front of the Hotel de Paris will flow both ways. Additional work is planned for the Allee Francois Blanc that leads down to Buddha Bar, and the Casino hopes to attract a wider variety of players. Managers are also considering giving the Cafe de Paris a makeover.

In other news, the Observatory Grotto has been closed for an indefinite period for work to improve security. Prince Albert officially inaugurated the solar panels at Fontvieille Fire Station, the first of a dozen more public buildings planning to install green energy in 2020. And a new Archbishop, Mgr Dominique-Marie David has been announced for the Principality. The former English teacher was ordained in 1991. Archbishop Barsi will retire to his home town of Nice.

And finally, Monaco celebrates its patron saint, Ste Devote on Monday. There'll be boat burning and fireworks on Sunday evening (when Australians celebrate Australia Day), and a much anticipated day off on Monday. Enjoy!
