Happy New Year! Street celebrations may have been restricted in Monaco but there were plenty of fireworks lighting up the hills, and the yachts parped with joy for a good 15 minutes.

So what's been happening while we were away? Well, Minister of State Pierre Dartout tested positive but thanks to the vaccine has had only mild symptoms. A massive Covid testing campaign began on Monday in Monaco schools and businesses, with positive cases shooting up from 36 to 108 after the first day. Italy is set to introduce its Super Green Pass on 10 January for those who've been vaccinated or recovered from Covid. President Macron is trying to do the same in France, admitting that his strategy is to persuade anti-vaxxers to get their jabs by making it difficult for them to circulate freely. He further explained, "When my freedoms threaten those of others, I become someone irresponsible. Someone irresponsible is not a citizen."

The Nice to Cap d'Ail commuter boat service is back on the table. After the tender failed (see 3 June 2021 newsletter), a second search with different criteria has found six possible service providers, including innovative non-polluting startups and experienced motor boat operators.

If you travel round town on an electric trottinette, note that from 24 January you must wear a helmet.

Monaco Run 2022 is going ahead and subscriptions are now open. The event takes place 12 to 13 February and includes the Pink Ribbon walk.

Observateur de Monaco carries an interview with Monegasque Tigrane Seydoux, cofounder of Big Mamma restaurant chain. He'll be opening an outlet at Larvotto later this year.

And finally...

The sales started on Sunday and end on 31 January. Enjoy!
