What's new

SBM's Monte Carlo Beach is looking for a new chef for its Elsa restaurant since Benoit Witz is now leaving Monaco for the Var. Rumour has it that an up and coming female chef from Bolton, England is in the running as his replacement. April Erring is commonly known by her nickname Red, and her speciality is fish.

This weekend is Easter, which means we get a day off on Monday. It's the most important event in the Christian calendar and if you'd like to celebrate the Diocese de Monaco has published a PDF listing of services in the Catholic churches. No doubt St Paul's Anglican Church will be open too, although strict Covid measures are in place.

Saturday is also a very special anniversary for Monaco. Fifty years ago, on 3 April 1971, French singer Severine won the Eurovision Song Contest representing the Principality, which has taken part in the competition 24 times since it began in 1959. The 2020 contest was cancelled for obvious reasons, but this year the finals are scheduled to take place on 22 May in Rotterdam.

In brief

French President Macron announced yesterday that all France is to go into lockdown for the whole of April. From today police will be checking roads and rail for people flouting the 10km-Covid restrictions.

Grimaldi Forum has opened the ticket office for its summer art exhibition featuring the work of Alberto Giacometti.

Monaco resident Lewis Hamilton has won the first F1 Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain, with Monegasque Charles Leclerc coming in 6th.

Do convicts have it easy in Monaco's jail? Observateur de Monaco reveals the truth.

IMSEE has released its latest statistics on Monegasque demographics.

And finally...

Giraudi Group continues to come up with new ideas for feeding the Principality. This week Beefbar has created takeaway variation of steak-frites. Called Relais Beefbar, it's essentially different cuts and preparations of steak with a side of chips topped with a secret recipe sauce from Relais de Paris. Check it out on the company's dedicated food delivery site. Enjoy!
