What's new
On Tuesday five of us went to Monaco Open Air Cinema to see Quentin Tarantino's latest, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film is set in 1969 and follows Rick Dalton and his stuntman and gofer Cliff Booth, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt respectively. Rick's star is in decline, but he hopes to reignite his career by getting an introduction to his new neighbour Roman Polanski and his new wife Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie).
As the title suggests, the movie industry plays a large part in the story, and much of the enjoyment of watching comes from recognizing references to other films, actors and directors. Our gang of five all agreed that the cinematography was superb but that initially the story feels disjointed. There are fewer violent, gory scenes than in other Tarantino movies, but if you don't like the idea of watching someone's head being continuously smashed against a table, even if only for a brief period, then this film is not for you.
As guidance, it's rated R-Restricted in the USA, 18 in the UK, and "interdit aux moins de 12 ans" in France. On IMDb the public currently award it 8.2/10 and the critics 83/100. Some have reservations tho', particularly about the movie's portrayal of women, who seem to have been chosen from a list of stereotypes.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is being screened four more times on the Rock before the open air cinema closes, and twice at the cinema in Princess Grace Theatre this week.
