Bag yourself some bitter oranges

Free fruit handouts in Monaco.

Proper marmalade, made with Spanish Seville oranges and packed with fruit peel, is a particularly British conserve. Many start the day with it slathered on toast, and some, including DH Lawrence, cheer themselves up by making it. If you're one of them, you should start collecting and washing your jam jars.

Ideal for making marmalade to go with your morning baguette, somewhere in the region of 18 tonnes of bitter oranges are harvested each year from the citrus trees that line the streets of Monaco. Once the cold winter weather improves, Direction de l'Amenagement Urbain gardeners harvest the fruit during their annual pruning operation. Once collected, approximately five to seven tonnes of the oranges are handed out freely to anyone who wants them.
