What's new
Summer's on its way out and the Bison Fute warns that French holiday-makers will driving home on Saturday.
Once the tourists have departed, work will begin on improving the shops and restaurants at Larvotto beach. It's going to make the area much less attractive for at least a couple of years, but once completed we can look forward to a wider upper promenade with playgrounds, and a larger beach without its central jetty. A new seawater swimming area is planned too, separated from the bay with huge blocks fitted with 11 centimetre thick sheets of glass. These will not only keep out the jellyfish, but will give swimmers the impression of floating in an endless ocean.
On dry land, we've twice been to Duke since it opened (see 25 July 2019 newsletter). It offers an alternative for after-work relaxing in the Portier district. Both times we went on a Thursday and were treated to live music, once with a pop covers band, the next time with jazz. We chose a bottle of Minuty rose from the wine menu and small plates of yakitori (yummy), barbajuan (lovely), prawn tempura (tasty but prefer crispier batter), and gyoza. Previously we've had the mini cheeseburgers and a platter of cheese and charcuterie. Service was friendly and happy. There were plenty of punters who were just having a drink, and of course, if you want more substantial food, Sensais is just next door.
