What's new

The requirement for construction work in Monaco is pretty much like painting the Forth Bridge. Grand Prix brings two months of work every year, with the resurfacing of roads and the erection of barriers and stands. From now until the end of May it's going to be increasingly difficult to get around. At rue du Portier the street refurbishment continues, but it's already looking better with it's white paving stones. On avenue JF Kennedy the Miramar has been gutted and the building next door demolished, marking the end of the Stella Polaris pizzeria.

But there are always new restaurants to replace the old. Over at the Sporting d'Ete complex, Coya (see 10 May 2018 newsletter) has reopened for a second year. The Peruvian fusion chain has a view over the Med and is convenient for the start of an all-nighter in Jimmy'z. It's open Thu-Mon during April and May, gradually increasing to 7 days a week in summer. For the uninitiated there's a 95 euros tasting menu (more than double that during GP). Expect loud music, trendsetters and a party atmosphere.

Like many of our readers we were saddened when Royal Thai closed (see 2 Aug 2018 newsletter). The premises have been taken over by an entrepreneurial, Swiss, 7-year resident of the Principality who's come up with a new 'concept'. KOMO involves a restaurant, patisserie, water bar and boutique. The cuisine carries the name of 3-star Mirazur chef, Mauro Colagreco, and the pastries have been signed off by Pierre Herme, famous for his macaroons (ooh, err, missus!). If you have the palate for it, there are around 150 'cuvees' in the water bar, and as you'd expect in Monaco, the boutique sells upmarket brand clothes and unique accessories. It's open Mon-Fri 8:00-22:00, Sat 9:00-22:00.
