What's new

We really did want to bring you the lowdown on Maya Jah, which opened this week. Its facebook page asserts they typically reply within an hour, but we waited two days, by which time it was too late. When we phoned, a machine asked us to leave our details and someone would call us back. We're still waiting. We rocked up anyway on Tuesday evening but were reduced to squinting at the menu attached to the terrace gate while pondering how so many men in sharp black suits had managed to reserve tables.

At least now there's a menu online. The Pastors's chicken tikka masala is twice the price of that in Beausoleil's Indian Star and New Indien. Obviously we can't comment on the taste, but we do note that the menu doesn't list lassi yoghurt drinks, suggesting the food won't be too spicy. Indeed the hottest dish, with a 2-chilli rating, is lamb rogan josh. Desserts are limited to whatever pastry chef Julien Landru places on the trolley, so probably no kulfi.

Chef Ravinder Negi previously worked for the Oberoi luxury hotel group, and there's no doubt that Maya Jah is targeting upmarket clients who value image as highly as substance, if not more so. Let us know what you think if you try it before us.

Check out the Monaco-Japon rentree classes if you prefer East- to South Asian culture. Yasuko Kawashima is teaching Japanese, price 25 euros pp in collective classes, or 40 euros for an individual. You can also take a 50-minute Shiatsu class for 90 euros. Note also that the association celebrates its 10th anniversary at the end of 2017.
